Cultural Extras: Books of our childhood
Hi friends!
Can you remember your favorite book from your childhood? We do… and take them as a source of inspiration for our Cultural Extras blogpost! Take a look at inspirations and beautiful creations of our DT members – we’ve got something for your eyes and soul!
Tara:
I was trying to think of a single Children’s book to inspire my project for this assigment but it was so difficult. I loved books when I was younger and of course all the classics came to mind first – Red Riding Hood, Dr. Seuss, all the princess stories. I couldn’t decide. Luckily, I happened upon a photo of my daughter and I sleeping on the couch together and instantly thought – Sleeping Beauty! I know a classic fairy tale with a princess theme doesn’t necessarily stir up images of dark and grungy papers, but I just love the way the Wonderland papers emphasize the tones in the photo. I like to think of it as a modern twist on an old classic!

One of my favorite books when I was a young child, was the Chronicles of Narnia, and I adore seeing my children now reading it. The inspiration, therefore, behind this piece was simple! My all-time favorite quote from the book was this, “Know them by heart and pay no attention to appearances. Remember the signs & believe the signs. Nothing else matters.” I have applied this philosophy to so many areas in my life, and seeing my daughter here reading this book on her kindle, and knowing the difficulties that occasionally she is facing as she enters into her tween years – I hope that she does too.

One of my favourite books of my childhood was “The Secret Garden” by Frances Hodgson Burnett. Inspired by this book I made a mini tag-book. I used a theme of a brickwall and a gate; I used also some natural motifs: plants, birds, flowers, butterflies.
